acoustical considerations

A room for playing chamber music, teaching violin and cello lessons, have small performances, for rehearsals and still function as a Living Room of sorts for a family of chamber musicians is now under construction. The Owners are professional musicians who also have busy careers and an extended family, many of whom are also musicians.

The goal was for it to have a live sound, and feel like a living room, of sorts, balancing aesthetics, acoustics and budget. We looked at  room proportions, the wall, floor and ceiling assemblies to try to create a room with an acceptable reverberation time.  The resulting room has a vaulted ceiling and nonparallel walls as well as floor, wall and ceiling assemblies which contribute to the overall sound.   We conversed with Wes Lachot in Chapel Hill and Thorburn Associates in Cary.  3D Graphics by Martin Agency Senior Studio Artist, Greg Cassidy.
