New Practice Room in Basement Renovation: whitewashed brick wall, new wall finish, acoustic treatment

Basement Before Renovation

before

To make the most avoided room in the Basement (cold, damp, dark) into a practice room for a young violinist, light, air, and sound-proofing were needed. To introduce more light into the room, new openings for new windows were added as well as painting the brick white; removing the dark paneling and replacing it with Gypsum wallboard, painted white.  The acoustic design problem was to make the room live, while muting the sound for the rest of the house. (Have you ever lived with a string player? Nice to be able to talk on the phone while they are practicing!) Acoustic treatment  included separating the HVAC from the rest of the house, acoustic treatment to the ceiling and walls. Keeping the heat inside in the winter and out in the summer was solved by replacing old windows, sealing the walls, ceiling and floor, adding new insulation.
